Communicating effectively in the world of early childhood
By Laurence Bourassa | 8 April 2025

Communication is at the heart of our daily interactions, whether verbal or written. It's important to know how to communicate effectively, and this obviously applies to the world of early childhood. Communication between parents and educational staff is essential to children's well-being. That's why in this article we'll look at how to communicate effectively using the 5 questions: who, what, when, where and why.
Structure and communication:
This technique, widely used in fields such as journalism, is simple to remember and effective. By asking yourself the right 5 questions, you can structure your communication in a clear and precise way, bringing to the fore the elements that are essential for parents.
Let's take the example of an outing to the De Lyse orchard organized by Garderie Des Petites Fleurs, where the educator, Alexandra, needs to inform parents about the event. To ensure optimal communication, Alexandra chooses to apply the 5-question method.
Who: Who will be taking part in the outing?
The “Les chenilles” group and educators Alexandra and Sophie.
What - What's planned for the activity?
Apple picking and a visit to the farm.
When - Friday, October 15. Departure from daycare at 9 a.m., return at 3 p.m.
Where - Verger De Lyse, 123, rue des Ponts, Quebec City.
Why - What are the objectives of the outing, and why is participation relevant?
This outing will enable children to learn more about farm animals and the apple-growing profession. What's more, they'll be able to enjoy an on-site park.
The message could look something like this:
Dear parents,
We're pleased to announce that we're organizing a special outing to Verger De Lyse for the children in the Les chenilles group, accompanied by educators Alexandra and Sophie. Here are the essential details you need to know:
We'll be leaving the daycare center at 9 a.m. on Friday, October 15 for a day full of discoveries, returning at 3 p.m.!
On the schedule: apple picking and farm exploration. This excursion offers children a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of the farm and learn more about the apple-growing profession. What's more, there's a park on site where they can expend their energy and develop their motor skills.
To ensure that our little adventurers are well prepared, please provide them with the following items:
- A backpack to carry snacks and water.
- Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing, including walking shoes.
- A hat or cap and sunscreen for protection from the sun.
We are convinced that this outing will be a rewarding and entertaining experience. We urge you to register your child for this day of outdoor adventure.
